The Great Michigan Read Up North with the Hemingways
The “Up North with the Hemingways,” traveling exhibit is a companion to the Great Michigan Read. It includes a number of artifacts associated with Ernest Hemingway and his family and their experiences in Northern Michigan. The exhibit incorporates family photographs seen by the public for the first time, and first editions of magazines that printed his Michigan stories in the 1920s. In addition, a postcard sent to his father in 1919 while on a trip to Seney that inspired “Big Two Hearted River” and an unpublished handwritten story he wrote in high school about a lumber camp are included in the exhibit as well as many items relating to his boyhood experiences in Michigan. Also included with the exhibit is the video Ernest Hemingway: A Life in Michigan, a 30-minute documentary that focuses on the author’s years in Michigan. His experiences in Michigan played a major role in his development as a writer. The video will run in a continuous loop near the exhibit.
