The North sought after to free the Slaves. The South sought after to keep the Slaves as Slaves.

Slaves were paid very small, if anything. To Free the Slaves would mean they would be paid the same as a White person. This would increase the cost-of-production on Southern Farms/Plantations by an amount that would drive most out of affair.

North: Pro-Tariffs (to support Northern industrialism, to oppose foreign markets in America)
South: Anti-Tariffs (to support foreign markets in America, to oppose Northern industrialism)
