Banking on education: The president’s massive funding proposal is well-received at HCC


President Barack Obama announced a $12 billion initiative Tuesday to increase the number of college educated workers in the United States by investing in community colleges. Obama called the proposal a down-payment for a successful economy and future, and said community colleges are an undervalued asset. He spoke from Macomb Community College in Detroit, which has been hard-hit by the recession. The bulk of the initiative, $9 billion, would be distributed as grants to encourage partnerships between community colleges and high schools, four-year universities and local businesses. Obama has said he wants to increase the number of college graduates by 5 million before 2020.

Macomb County news: Neighborhoods funding may be lost
The county may lose $3 million in federal funding to fix up blighted neighborhoods because officials aren’t spending the money fast enough. Commissioners said Thursday that the funds for the Neighborhood Stabilization Program will be lost if the county can’t demolish homes by the Sept. 25 deadline.
