There is a Request for Proposals for a 25 year lease to refurbish and operate an aviation museum at the Heritage Hangar at Eagle Farm. Situated about 6km out of the centre of Brisbane, Eagle Farm is a largely industrial area. It used to be the site of Brisbane’s main airport until the current one was built.

Originally the site was just a landing field in 1922 next to the Eagle Farm racecourse. Two years later, in 1925 the Eagle Farm Aerodrome was officially opened. It serviced flights from Brisbane to regional centres in Queensland during the twenties and early thirties. In 1928 Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and two others landed the Southern Cross at Eagle Farm Aerodrome at the end of the first crossing of the Pacific Ocean from Oakland, California. 16,000 people rushed to Eagle Farm to greet the Southern Cross.

The first flight from Queensland to Sydney, NSW left Eagle Farm in 1930 flown by Australian National Airways. The Aerodrome then closed when Archerfield was opened. It was still used by Kingsford Smith when he departed for California in the Lady Southern Cross in 1934. It was reopened by the American during World War 2 and new runways were built. The aerodrome was used as an assembly plant for aircraft being shipped from the USA and test flights. The Allied Air Forces used Hangar 7 to test captured aircraft of the Japanese. It is Hangar 7 which will house the aviation museum which is currently calling for RFP via tender.

After the war, Eagle Farm Airport was reopened for civil flights with Ansett ANA and Trans Australian Airlines (TAA) and Archerfield was used for light operations only. By the 1970s Eagle Farm was no longer large enough for Brisbane’s air services and Brisbane Airport was completed north of Eagle Farm in 1988.

Those interested in the RFP tender need to submit information by August 25 2010.

President Barack Obama announced a $12 billion initiative Tuesday to increase the number of college educated workers in the United States by investing in community colleges. Obama called the proposal a down-payment for a successful economy and future, and said community colleges are an undervalued asset. He spoke from Macomb Community College in Detroit, which has been hard-hit by the recession. The bulk of the initiative, $9 billion, would be distributed as grants to encourage partnerships between community colleges and high schools, four-year universities and local businesses. Obama has said he wants to increase the number of college graduates by 5 million before 2020.
