President Barack Obama announced a $12 billion initiative Tuesday to increase the number of college educated workers in the United States by investing in community colleges. Obama called the proposal a down-payment for a successful economy and future, and said community colleges are an undervalued asset. He spoke from Macomb Community College in Detroit, which has been hard-hit by the recession. The bulk of the initiative, $9 billion, would be distributed as grants to encourage partnerships between community colleges and high schools, four-year universities and local businesses. Obama has said he wants to increase the number of college graduates by 5 million before 2020.</p>
